Prose Nocturnes: All Is Fair In, Well, At Least Hate And War

The most notorious Nazi officials were out of our reach, of course, due to the excessive coverage of the press.  We had to be satisfied with the middlers---the grupenfuhrers, the camp adjutants, the clerks who compiled death lists:  and we did not have to devise our own means, as they provided them for us (although, sometimes, applying the extremest tortures, a man might vomit on his uniform), and they screamed and screamed and begged for death, but we knew how to keep them, just barely, on this side of life to suffer more.
