Fantasy

He comes in his tux, she her ball gown,

in the limo he had promised.

She is treated like a queen,

doors opened and polite things said.

They eat at the restaurant on 29th,

music playing softly in the background.

The lights dimmed down low,

the perfect romantic settings.

The surrounding sights are like a dream.

They sip their wine and chat cheerfully.

They can't believe it is their third year together,

it's a fairy tale come true.

They have always got along very well,

never a dull conversation.

Never a disagreement

they couldn't compromise on.

Deciding not to end happiness soon,

they drive to the park lit up by fireflies and stars.

He holds her hand tenderly as they stroll,

a single tear rolls down her cheek.

He asks, "What is the matter love?",

which makes her cry even more.

He leads her to a bench,

surrounded by rhododendron.

She pulls herself together and simply explains,

she has never felt this good in her life.

He understands, but not completely,

he knows the story but hasn't lived it.

The painful story of her father,

the one that drinks all the time.

The one that was never there for her,

and will never be.

She has lost hope of him getting better,

he is too consumed by the alcohol.

Her companion squeezes her tighter,

assuring her that he will always be there for her.

She needed that more than anything,

almost as bad as what was to come.

Seeing the love in her eyes,

he realizes this is the perfect time.

He gets down on one knee,

and proposes to her.

She is so overwhelmed,

saying yes through her tears.

Their story is over now,

or has it just begun.

She hopes that it will end

with the man beside her, beside her then.

He also has this hope, and that he can help her,

to erase the painful memories she holds.

They will treasure the moments they have together,

in this longed for fantasy.
