by Jeph Johnson
one winter
while walking
tilting
down Broadway
umbrella lodged
awkwardly
in my armpit
I penciled down words
from signs phrases from bumpers
and other abnormal urban observations
while the rain made a
tinny toy
piano plunk
to avoid the shower
I darted into Belinki & DuPrey Gallery
where my eyes became awash
in a warm bath of Southwestern sunlight
shining behind a nearly-naked waking woman
who stretched her fingertips skyward over the mesa
her negligee so thin, her shape so apparent
surely she could not hold that position much longer!
the longer I looked
the more cognizant she seemed
the dizzier and less important I was
still
stretching
motionless
my pencil
made the moves
the clouds outside
burst to Baby Grand
This magnificent poem of yours helped inspire one that I have just posted; and, of course, I have acknowledged your poem in the sub-heading of my text. There are very few poets, and poems, that inspire me to write; and I am most grateful to you for the inspiration.

After the first reading and comment, I went right back up to the top and read it again, and admire it even more! This is a superb ekphrasis poem!
