"If I Pay"

by Jeph Johnson

Once smitten by her charming call
I ride the rail of fate 'til the end
Twice shy, in her arms I fall
I can't fail if I wait and pretend
The times are gonna get better
Though rhymes dishonor every letter
I write while waiting for that day
As my patience melts away
And longing feels like failing
And wanting feels like craving
And barter like blackmailing
No one will give it away
Even when and if I pay
