Goodnight Sweet Child

Folder:
June 2002 Poetry

Holding you,

rocking you,

swaying back and forth,

watching you slowly,

but surely,

fall asleep.

Your eye lids,

drop.

But the instant I try,

to put you back,

into your crib,

your eyes shoot open.

And you smile,

as I pull you close to me,

again.

I watch you fall asleep,

and envision myself,

with my own children,

and I smile.

It fills me with such joy,

watching you sleep,

in sweet solitude.

Finally,

I lay you in your crib,

but don’t want to leave.

I run my hand,

down your soft sweet face,

and watch you sleep.

Sleep soundly my dear,

and I’ll be here,

when you wake,

from your sweet slumber.
