Char

He asked me, penniless,

For the loan of a dime,

I replied I didn't have one,

    But could afford a smile.

He offered his hand,

    As he smiled back.

I felt him sincere,

    And he introduced Jack.

They asked if I drank,

    "Crikeys!" I said,

"When they don't mind,"

"Or as long as it's wet."

We put down a beer,

As they spun me a line,

Of a bloke who they said,

    Was wealthy divine?

It was later indicated,

That it was me and my smile,

For they said it was known,

    The day's of the dial.
