Living one's life is like developing a book,
with each day a new sentence, paragraph, or page.
No one knows as they read along,
what exactly is going to be.
As a child we start building our plots,
meeting characters that will take us along.
Some will come and some will go,
but all will help our journey to learn.
In our teens we're sure we know it all,
no one can change our conviction.
We'll live forever so there's no need to rush,
our plot line gets a little unclear.
Once we are in our twenties we see,
that the story's needs have to be defined.
We work, we date, we marry and procreate,
the plot deepens and grows wide.
The thirties fill in the responsible chapters,
that include family, career, and friends.
Each important in it's own way,
to get us on a meaningful path.
Our forties can give us joy and despair,
plus things that can get us unglued.
Midlife it's called and it recaps the past,
which can make us review our life's choices.
The story is more comfortable when in our fifties,
with most of life's plots now settled in.
Our offspring are off creating our sequels,
before our own novel is close to reaching its end.
The chapters of our sixties make us think,
of ways to enjoy our life's rewards.
If lucky we retire and enjoy what's left,
before our life's story concludes.
Our seventies start us building to an end,
as we prepare for the ultimate finish.
By tying loose ends and making amends,
to those that we feel we weren't true.
Our eighties usually bring us to our final chapter,
hoping we come to a satisfactory end.
Finishing our story the same as our life,
closing our eyes, and falling to sleep.
