The day that Cecily's spirit was crushed
Her hopes and dreams were lost in the rush
And winsome wishes were hastily flushed
She hid her face as she wept and blushed
All of her teachers had encouraged her to draw
But her father only saw it as a character flaw
His utter dismissal left her broken and raw
Her dreams were doomed for his word was law
Slowly she would grow alarmingly thin
And use her art pencils to pierce her fair skin
Roll down her sleeves to conceal the damage
And stem her tears as best she could manage
Cecily was despondent and wouldn't be consoled
Resigning herself to someone else's goals
Grimly pouring her paints down the drain
Shrinking in the shadow of his disdain
Her sweetest delights would be quietly purged
Life ebbed away as something else emerged
Her sweetness was smothered and seldom grieved
And yet wearily the goals were achieved
She followed the course and earned her degree
Her charms diminished to a paucity
Neither bitter expressions nor animosity
But barely tamed temper and ferocity
