Blind Date

  Blind Date

  Clark Steven Lupton

  2002

I'm dating you so I can see

If you're really the right girl for me

This blind date is arranged by a friend

So you're lucky you don't have to spend

He didn't say if you are cute

But that you  have a personality I can't refute

Which probably means you're an ugly gal

That really isn't good for my morale

My friend reminds me that beauty is skin deep

Which I think means you really need beauty sleep

He says not to worry you're really nice

But to date a stranger can be bad advice

He said, "Come on, be her pal!

You don't want to be a Shallow Hal!"

But we're born into a physical world

And at first look I almost hurled

I'm just saying that on a blind date

You want an appearance that you can relate

And hope that you're a decent match

And don't have something I could catch

So while the terrorists are out there bombin

We're trying to find things we have in common

  Common intelligence, not too dense

A little bit of common sense

  Common tastes, common friends

Dresses in the latest fashion trends

  She takes care of herself

An interesting book or two on her shelf

But can you get any stranger?

I look in your eyes and I sense danger!

And when you talk you're such a bore

Let this date end - I can't take anymore!

So in my constant search for Miss Right

I guess I'll have to put up with you tonight

We simply are not having not having a blast

And as blind dates go, you are my last

Author's Notes/Comments:

I've actually have had a couple of excellent blind dates, but I've had more (several of them were callers when I was a radio DJ) that were bad. Then I had one that finally tipped the balance on the scale of hopeful vs hopelessness and hopelessness outweighed hopeful in the end and I just had to express this in a poem.
