LAMENTATION
The lush green lawn lay like carpet, underneath my foot in the church foreyard;
Amongst the grass, those few violets sprightly smiled, holding up their heads!
They looked so significant, as the tearful eyes of the congregation wept in sorrow,
And I got glued to the coffin in which the mortal remains of that accident prone youth lay.
Prayers said unto God seemed to console the parents and dear ones!
As the Head Priest held the customary funeral service mumbling words,
Optimism, pessimism and pragmatism seemed to kindle my sinking soul;
And made me think as if people were not realistic in their approach to life!
An elite who spoke, banged on God’s will to pluck the flower;
That brought a grinding halt to the life of that innocent, agile adult;
In a few minutes the parted soul would be laid to unimaginable rest;
And all those who attended would wipe their tears and walk away!
The procession marched and reached the graveyard behind the church;
As the coffin got lowered and placed inside, everyone bade ‘Goodbye’;
As an onlooker, I sat on an old tomb-stone looking at the lad’s parents; and
Trembling with welled up tears; the lad’s father came and sat by my side.
Whispered a bit about how his son got knocked over by a devilish truck;
Unable to bear and control my tears, I patted his back to show my share;
As people faded off from the yard, my friend got whisked away by a few;
Yet, I found myself sitting on the same tomb-stone, pondering a lot!
My eyes took leave of the grave that was being built by masons in haste!
And my mind explored what’s in between worldly birth and death!
Oh! That smartly smiling violet that had bloomed in an off-season,
Had faded off and fallen from the stalk, to remind me of life and untimely death!
Your life on earth that has seized to exist would continue to bloom!
Someday, somewhere; may be in the good heavenly garden of the Creator;
When everyone bids goodbye and reaches that everlasting shore to be with Him,
In His loving arms; and then, there would be ‘No more sorrow and no more death’!
