carousal glass
beckoning me to pass
through those
wondrous metal gates
dizzy lights
dazzling the eyes
with a stream of music
feeding the enchantment
of a young, ecstatic mind
childhood rushes forward
silky blond hair flailing
in the wind
cotton candy falling
on oxford shoes
with that silly stained
pink panther t shirt and
those awful green shorts
my brother always hated
lime in color they were
and all too happily hugging
my pudgy little legs
the Carny barkers
addressing the crowds
clowns juggling on unicycles
while their clown fathers
create animal balloons
for all the little girls
I realize
just like me
the day is hot, loud and wonderful
I'm in heaven
tired but joyously stirred
the Fourth of July 'Carnival'
at the local City park
in my innocent eyes
back in the early 1970's
nothing in the world
could compare to it
I was a princess in lime green shorts
and oxford shoes
with sticky fingers and a gap toothed
smile
walking so proudly all around
with my Mommy
and big sister Cindy
on either side of me
tiredly indulging my near
every whim..........
