California

~California~

The earthquake hurls antiques to the floor.

"Thousands of dollars lost!" wails an old woman.

She'll shake all day while her cat licks its paws in the sun.

The earth shakes; the old

The earth shakes; the old woman shakes; the cat relaxes after the crisis; and the sun continues to shine.  In three short lines, you have introduced four aspects of nature, each doing something different from the others.  The old woman mourns the dollar amount lost to her in the broken antiques.  The earthquake did not pause for such a consideration, of course; the cat is occupied with grooming itself; and the sun, the most distant of the four aspects, is uneffected by either the earthquake or the monetary loss.  In three short lines, you have shown us the kind of processes that go on, behind the scenes so to speak, of a mundane event.  This is a fantastic, a brilliant, poem.
