Lost Too Soon
Days long ago
are the ones that hurt
when we realize what came before
and know can never be again.
They are the ones
that in our hearts feel the worst,
and at the same time feel the best.
We cannot stop from growing old,
but we can stop growing up.
In us all is the child that once was.
Our hearts are a cruel trick of nature
that holds tightly to things better lost,
but lost too soon.
I know it best to let go,
but yet can’t bring myself to it.
The pain carried around so long is now gone
but in its place is the most hurtful happiness.
I look back at the days long ago,
and see how foolish I really was
with the passage of more time I’ll look to today
and feel the same as I do about yesteryear,
and say the same.
Looking back on days long passed
looking at the days long ago
I see a confused child lost in his own world.
The world of days long ago!
