Dancing Alone

Dancing Alone

I hear the pulsing music,

The thump of bass and drum.

I feel the swell of instruments.

Those throbbing vocals come.

My heart, in fleet surrender,

Takes wing and not by chance.

My tapping foot starts skipping

As all alone I dance.

Does no one hear that music

That sets my soul a whirl?

I've known its beat for ages,

Since but a love-struck girl.

The throbbing beat of passion,

The lilting waltz of tears,

The unrequited rhythm,

That overpowers fears.

I've held its pulsing tightly

Inside, it's been my own.

The truth is, I cry nightly,

As I'm dancing all alone.
