Brownsoul Theory

My theory,

   The Brownsoul Theory,

is something you might not be able to understand.

                  First of all,

              I'm not your average

           sixteen year old Black male.

Contrary to what America wants to believe,

I'm young, gifted, and might I add,

                      BLACK!

Unlike the seemingly "typical" Black male my age,

I don't parade around everywhere and declare

  myself a grown man.

Unlike the seemingly "typical" Black male my age,

I don't think about drugs, money, sex, and

  thug life all the time.

Unlike the seemingly "typical" Black male my age,

  I believe that I have a purpose in life;

A purpose that is centered around strengthening

myself mentally, physically, and emotionally so

that one day, I might be able to strengthen my

    Black people as a whole.

                    Second of all,

If you can't except me for who I am,

then get out of my face,

becuz JAMAR is gonna be JAMAR,

no matter what you or others may think.

Am I suppose to apologize for

          not being on the varsity basketball team;

          not being the most popular person in school;

          not being a follower;

being smart and wanting a promising future.

Am I suppose to apologize becuz I listen to other kinds

of music other than rap!

Now don't get me wrong, I luv rap just like y'all do,

but every rap lyric doesn't have to be about

               degrading our sistas,

               killing our brothas,

destroying our lives with drugs & violence.

You may not agree with me, but we're destroying

                     our own people.

When you have three year olds running around

"droppin it like its hot" or saying curse

words more than they sing the alphabet,

then it is more than evident that

                   something is wrong.

Lastly,

my young black brothas and sistas,

  stop tryin to be gangstas,

       cuz y'all just fakstahs,

and real gangstas end up in jail, dead, or

                        lost to the world forever.

The life of drugs & gang-bangin ain't all glitzy

and glamorous. Its horrible! And the Ghetto is not

a place that should be glorified! And I'm not saying

that you should forget where you came from. I'm

saying that you should stop advertising it like its

the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

The Ghetto is the place where White society secludes

the lingering 30% of our Black Americans so they

can kill each other & make a bad name for all

of us. But they know not what they do, for

its our responsibility as the 70% of our

Black Americans who have "made it" to

educate and help our brothas and

              sistas in the ghettos across

                        America.

Before I close, I can't stress enough the importance

of respect for our heritage. You are not an African

American! You are a BLACK American, and be proud of

it! We don't need to "go back" to Africa! America is

our home! We have 500 years of men and women who helped

to build this country, who died to give us a better

place in this country, and you're going to disregard

all of that by not voting and allowing White people to

use the word NIGGA like its another catch phrase in pop

  culture!

This is my theory........

     THE BROWNSOUL THEORY.

        Take it or leave it!

Author's Notes/Comments:

I was feeling extremely political when I wrote this poem. It basically exlains the code that I live by and how it dictates who I am and how I view life.
