I think we see these so-called patriots (I call them Rightsers, they think everyone is trying to limit their Constitutional rights while they are busily trespassing on the rights of those with whom they disagree) always shifting the blame away from society at large and placing it on some perceived "enemy" or "subversive." When Lenin came in with the Bolsheviks in Russia, anyone who disagreed with him was an "Enemy of the Revolution." When Hitler acquired unlimited power in, I think, 1935, everyone who disagreed with him was an "Enemy of the Reich." It is easier to construct a straw man to blame then to construct equitable solutions.
We're certainly finding out who our friends are. Your comparison was accurate, and bravo for you: not being cowed by bullies in patriotic clothes who would love it if we would just make it easy for them and shut up.
As for the name calling, that just means you won the argument because he ran out of intelligent words and that's the best he could do. Wear it like a badge of honor.
As I watch the divide get wider, I am becoming increasingly disturbed by just how well the propaganda really works. I claim no "side". I am unaffiliated. Somehow, I get accused of being some label or another. I believe in fairness and kindness. Politics do not align with this spirit.
I am not trying to Win. I just want to be treated with compassion. I got tired of abuse. It was never easy to escape the mistreatment. It is sad to see it is systemic.
Thank you for your words. They are always appreciated.
My parents were very much like that---every setback or reversal I experienced was always blamed on my failure to comply with some rule in which they believed. In the autumn of my senior year at high school, I begin, metaphorically, to venture out from their shadow a bit (announcing to them that I wanted to be a poet was the beginning, and it sure did bring the house into an uproat), and finding out that their view of reality, the world, and so forth, was just as weird as the stuff of which they had accused me.
Attempted to get me to not eat Chinese food because C-19 originated there. I was not compliant. Tried to explain how racist that was. Not taken well. Power plays not popular with THE KID. No loss, love 'em just can't live under anyone's dictates. Sad.

Name calling is lame
