Shriners Hospitals for Children

The first thing I would like to tell you about is what the hospital looks and feels like and the people when you walk into the doors.  From the outside the hospital looks big and very welcoming.  When you walk into the hospital there are two sets of doors.  One of the first things you will see is a big playing area for the kids to play in while waiting to go see the doctor.  The play area has a lot of colors on the walls like red, yellow, green and more.  Also a lot of toys and books for the kids to play with.  Than the next thing you will see is the check in desk.  The check in desk is so they can let the doctor know you are there.

There is also a wall painted with all the animals you would see in a forest.  This was painted by a father whose child was helped at Shriners.  One more thing you will see is all of the people.  When you go to Shriners hospital you will meet really nice doctors, nurses, and a lot of other people that come from other states and countries.  I learn a lot about them and maybe I have made a new friend.

I was ten years old when I had my first surgery at Shriners.  Shriners hospital is like a second home for me.    I loved going to Shriners because the people do not care that I am in a wheelchair and walking is not easy for me but, this day I did not want to go.  I had to be at Shriners hospital at 8:00 a.m. in the morning and I could not eat for 24 hours before surgery.  I got checked in and than they showed me where my room was on second floor.  My room had two beds and one bathroom.  All of this was a lot for me to take in.  The second floor was very big just like first floor.  Also just like the first floor it was very welcoming.  This floor also has a lot of colors to like red, yellow, green, brown and more.  It made me feel like I was at home.  It has three playing areas just like the one on the first floor with a lot of toys and books for us kids to use.  There is also a game room with just games.

The next thing they asked me to do was go get labs taken so they had them for surgery I was not happy because, I have not had it done before.  My mom also had to get labs to so, if they needed it for the surgery.  The next day at 8:00 a.m. I went in for surgery.  I was in surgery for 7 ½ hours.  The doctors did surgery on both of my hips and on muscles on the back of both my legs.  The doctor’s did the surgery because my hips and legs were not growing normally.  Having all the surgery’s has helped out a lot.  After the surgery I didn’t eat for three weeks so, I had a IV in my hand and that is how the doctors and nurses were getting me to eat.  The first thing I ate was noodle soup that the cooks made just for me!

For me the next week or two were not easy for me, but I made it with the help of my family and friends.  My stay was 52 days in the hospital which, felt like a year.  When it was time for me to go home from the hospital it was not easy for me.  It was like I made a new family and it was not easy to go home.

In conclusion I know that having this surgery and others, the doctors, nurses and all the people have helped me in ways I will never know.  I have learned to be myself no matter what people say or do.  I hope by telling you this little story I have helped you in some way.
