Getting Past Your Past

You had a dyfunctional outbringing;
a mother who didn't want you,
a father that ignored you.

Decades later you wear
the scars on your sleeve,
looking for others' sympathy.

You can't get past your past,
dwelling on your yesterday
won't get you through today.

They ruined your childhood, fair enough
but you can't take them into maturity
and expect to rise above your history.

Leave what's over in the rearview;
you have to move on someday
and forget the pain of former days.
