Family

Family
is such an unfamiliar word
in my household.

Living with these strangers,
sharing the same breaths
with foreign residents.

I wish I knew them
like I know myself,
but silence permeates the walls.

Anger is more accessible
than love in this place;
cross words ensnare us.

I wish I could feel at home here
where the welcome mat
that greets me doesn’t lie.

And if I have to leave
just to experience
a sense of belonging, so be it.
