We the People

When did we stop

being "We the People"?

When did it become

me vs. you,

us vs. them?

Who brought division

to our union?

Who took away

our liberties,

our freedoms?

When did our nation

become broken,

and was it ever whole?

Our purpose was

to strive for perfection,

but did we lose our way

at some point?

Our nation now stands

on those principles

it was founded on.

Documents saying

"All men are created equal"

even while some

were treated as property,

not peers.

The words were still written,

and though not in practice

were believed by

this country's authors.

So we move beyond

those misaligned actions

and endeavor to

look past prior mistakes.

And we can focus on

how far we've come,

a land brimming

with potential.

We must hold onto hope

and our dreams

for a better future

rather than dwell

on yesterday's defects.

That is the only way

we can grow

because we are not

our ancestors

unless we allow

hate to survive.

But if we let

love extinguish

that flame,

then we let it

become our platform.

And on love

we can stand taller

than our differences.

We can bring unification

to the forefront

as our forefathers

always intended.
