The Truth of War

A young marine

a mere 22 years old

steps foot in Khandahar

He was never prepared for his job

the clearing of mine fields

a task that seemed simple enough

he threw out food ration packs as ordered

and watched as the famished children ran out

a quick turn of his head,

loud explosions followed

and he knew his work was complete

his heart is full of terror for the day

this ever comes to his country

A bitter man

22 years old

steps foot back in the U.S.A.

After thousands of years of human history, it appears indeed absurd that men should have wars. Reasons are always quite complex but it is absurd that a species that boasts intelligence, awareness, and even a privileged relationship with a god (compared to other living beings), is not able to solve the problems that lead to war and to misery.
Nice thought-provoking poem.
