Amina has recently married Robi Hasan. Robi is a businessman while Amina is a homemaker. Before marriage, they did not know each other.
However, right after the marriage, both of them have fallen deeply in love. Even though most of the time Robi has to stay outside due to his business, yet he never misses to call her up.
The relatives and the neighbours are so happy to see the couple since they appear to be made for each other.
Robi, his mother Saira Banu, and Amina live at Khulshi in Chittagong. Khulshi is a very busy locality. It is a place where skyscrapers and slums are found side by side that marks the distinction between wealth and poverty.
Robi’s father passed away two years back in a road accident. The devastating road accidents are on the increase taking away numerous lives every year.
Amina’s parents are in Dhaka, another city in Bangladesh. They visit them every so often. It has been one year since the marriage took place. Saira has frequently been insisting Amina on conceiving a baby.
But, Amina feels extremely shy whenever she hears about it. Even her father Jibon Ahmed and mother Jebin Akter have also expressed their views about that.
Amina is not mentally prepared to conceive a baby at this stage. Nonetheless, she has talked to Robi about this matter. Robi seems to have no problems with that.
Eventually, Amina agrees too. For the last few months, the couple has been endeavouring hard for good news but no positive outcome has appeared so far.
Amina has talked about this to her friend Setu who has advised her to consult with a doctor soon. In the meantime, Robi’s mother Saira has poisoned into his ears like Iago saying that Amina can never get pregnant. She must have some problems with her.
As a result, Robi remains upset for the last few days. He does not feel like talking to Amina. Whenever she starts a conversation, Robi goes away from her.
At last, Amina has told him about going to the doctor. Robi’s facial expression says that he does not like the idea of consulting with a doctor. However, he agrees.
The doctor has prescribed certain medical tests for Amina, which she has maintained properly and gone back to the chamber with her husband.
Seeing the reports, the doctor says, “There is nothing wrong with any of her reports. Amina is absolutely fine; she can get pregnant. It means that Mr. Robi, you must have some complications inside you. If you agree, then I can prescribe certain tests for you as well.”
The last words of the doctor have hit Robi like piercing arrows. Thanking the doctor, he leaves the place with Amina quickly. Inside the car, Amina shockingly asks,
- Why’ve you rushed out of the chamber like that?
- What’s wrong with that?
- The doctor has suggested you undergo some tests but you have literally escaped from there!
- No, no, no, I’m a healthy man. I don’t have any physical problems. Perhaps, the doctor’s not that efficient.
- What’s your plan then?
- What plan?
- What’ll be your answer when my parents and your mother will be throwing rain of questions at us about the test-results?
- Don’t you worry. I’ll handle that easily.
Robi has been suffering from an inferiority-complex now. He cannot reveal to his relatives that it is he who has problems, not Amina.
He has profound faith in her. She will never disclose it. The thought of the society’s calling him a eunuch is poking him everyday like a huge pin.
Robi does not know what to do and what not to do. He appears to have lost all interest from life.
After three-six months, Amina starts having headaches; she vomits every now and then. Robi takes her to a local doctor immediately. Upon observing the symptoms, the doctor anticipates that perhaps she is pregnant.
Now, another psychological turmoil has been squeezing him. If the previous doctor is right, then Amina is not supposed to get pregnant since Robi is unable to be a father; if the second doctor’s words are correct, then it means that she must have slept with someone else.
Robi has stopped going outside now. Mental tension does not let him sleep. Amina has frequently been talking of her chastity but Robi looks at her with hatred and suspicion.
She even suggested him of talking to that previous doctor again; maybe there were some mistakes in those reports. Who knows!
But, Robi does not believe her whatsoever. He thinks that these are all her tactics to cover up her guilt.
One night, Amina was asleep; Robi strangles her the way Othello strangled Desdemona. She dies. The next morning, the doctor, who told earlier that Robi had problems, called him saying that he is extremely sorry because the reports were wrong! Robi ‘can’ become a father.
Hearing this, Robi falls on the bed like a big branch of a tree!
