Snake Charmer

The snake charmer goes,

Holding his serpents,

Inside the baskets,

To charm the watchers he hardly knows.

The snakes once so poisonous,

Are a means for the charmer to live on,

For the children, he sets in motion,

Keeping in mind the snakes’ status.

The pungi of the charmer is the wand,

That he uses to hypnotise, to make a bond.

Author's Notes/Comments:

‘Snake charming’ is the practice of hypnotising a snake by playing ‘pungi’, an instrument. In Hindu mythology, snake worship represents the lofty status of snakes.
