Migrant Mother
have you come home
have you been lost
in the technological boom
have the seeds been sown
have you come home
to pick the crumbs
off the bottom of this dust bowl
(i took a look at you)i saw your face looming
i saw your children
as people packed macys
just two blocks away
(an uneasing afternoon)you stared at the traffic
that put soot on your lips
and on your childrens hair
and on their foreheads you kissed
Migrant Mother
have you come home
have you been lost
in the technological boom
have the seeds been sown
have you come home
to pick the crumbs
off the bottom of this dust bowl
(there were many fools)i saw their face hiding
avoided your children
it wasn't them and it couldn't be
just two blocks away
(everyone was cool)you stared at the debt clock
as you entered the fair
with your wragged cloths
and as their clothing betrayed them
a cloak and a dagger
the new years crowd overflowing
Migrant Mother
have you come home
have you been lost
in the technological boom
have the seeds been sown
have you come home
to pick the crumbs
off the bottom of this dust bowl
we've missed you, i guess
they ignored you, for sure
you've come back-we're coming
Migrant Mother
the store is closed
the one i used to go in memory
as a kid for candy
and the corporation that replaced it
that merged
with a company two blocks away
that ran off with the money,
and chased the Migrant Mother to 42nd street
