a shoeless flower girl
and her soot-covered
little brother
sifting for california poppies
in the abandoned,
dandelion-filled lots
on the new york coast line
that once were reaped
for a merchant's bouquet
i've been to many such places
where people sift for legends
that were never really there
till a made man sold an illusion
filled their bag
and took it all with them
gold tipped wands
and star-encrusted wizards
who pulled shoeless children
out of a hat,
after disappearing parent's wallet into it
then disappearing into distant mansions
they left shoeless flower girls
and their soot-covered
little brothers
sifting for california poppies
in abandoned,
dandelion-filled lots
all along the coast
and highway
and railroad lines
