A Simple Ring

As I watched an elderly man, I noticed his hands wrinkled with age,

But aware of more than his wrinkled hands

I  was aware of a band, a simple gold band upon his finger,

A wedding ring, how many years had it been there,

It appeared to be worn and scratched,

A simple round piece of precious gold,

But this was more than just a piece of gold

formed into a perfect circle,

This simple gold ring stood for so much,

This ring, a witness to the world that he had

made a life long commitment,

This ring, given to him and slipped upon his finger by

the intimate love of his life,

A simple ring telling others that he had one true love,

A true love that made him complete, and he needed no others.

A simple gold ring worn with pride to let the world know his heart, soul, mind and body belonged to only one,

This preious gold ring no matter what the cost, was priceless,

Priceless because it told the world that he was proud to have

taken a wife, proud to love only her and proud to be faithful to her.

A simple ring upon his finger, I think not.....

Author's Notes/Comments:

As a man in our congregation was teaching I noticed his hands and his wedding band, the band fit his finger kind of tight, like it had become too small, and it was worn out,,and I wondered at that moment how long had that ring been on his finger and being married I thought about all my wedding ring stands for.
