I do not know all the mean things they did
to you in their infernal cruelty.
I know that they seemed eager to be rid
of you the day that Lady Certainly
offered them sixty dollars---the sole bid.
Skittish because of fear in memory,
you needed some time to learn how to trust;
some time, not much. Now in our family,
you are supremely loved, and nevermore
to be confined behind a celler door.
Your presence---in its several tones and measures
(playful . . . resting . . . alert)---provides such pleasures
in variations, seeming without end.
You are, to all of us, a real best friend.

Author's Notes/Comments:
Lady Zoey, our long-haired chihuahua, came to live with us in November of 2010. Adopted from an abusive home, she has, after the initial adjustment, blossomed into a magnificent companion---friendly, compassionate, smart, and alert. Despite not knowing language, she is aware of our moods---in good times and difficulties, her behavior adjusts to share the moment with us. I thank our Lord Jesus Christ that, in His Grace, He has made provision for our beloved pets to join us in Heaven. Both the Prophet Isaiah and the Apostle Saint Paul, in his epistle to the Christians in Rome, declare this as fact.
