The Westward Sun

(For Greg on what would have been his 30th birthday)

The wind whispers its secrets in the twilight

Wisps of wisdom for those who have ears to hear

A chill in the air reaches me with the dying of the day

And in those moments, I feel you near

And in those moments, I find a new way

To see the world through melting eyes of ice.

To understand how I could have lost you twice.

I remember

The songs that we would sing

The stories that we would share

The laughs that hung in the afternoon air

Like tastes still sweet on the tongue

While always walking westward

Hand in hand

Shadowing the setting sun

Never letting it rest beneath the cruel horizon.

We tried to stretch the time this way

Attempting to lengthen every day

But could never keep the night from falling.

So now I search for your shape in the dark

Knowing you are there, knowing you still care

Knowing your halo drifts through the air

Knowing you wait to walk with me again.

And when that morning will come

We will no longer follow the westward sun

Then the light of your smile will shine

And your beauty will exist outside of time

And we will sail off to the distant shore

And the world will be made whole once more.
