A Winter Gone Warm

On days like this, the wind carries the

aroma of the sea

If I inhale deep enough, I can smell the

fish from the pier

I make my way, through the field

My tennis shoes grab the road

and we walk, a friend and I, dodging

cars and counting cows

Things like this could make me a believer

We stop to taste the honeysuckle- who

bloomed way too early

See even Mother Earth finds herself confused

I feel like a child again, padding feet on

the pavement, feeling the weight of

love for the first time

His name was Lewis and we would sit together

and we would hold hands

Nikki begins to rap and I wave my arms,

grooving with her rhythm

See we are best friends, one white and one black

And folks would drive by, putting on their brakes, staring

at us as if we were criminals

And the traditional white women would ask "what's this

world coming to"

It's coming into civilization, so get with

the program

At eighteen we decided we would be

friends forever

So we got matching tats on our upper thighs

That was four years ago, and I miss that girl

But that's the faced fact of life, and now we

have to have an adult's view of the world

A winter gone warm

A dream come undone

No longer is there such a thing as innocense, or

freedom of hands

We were all fooled

And there's nothing I wouldn't give

to be foolish again

Pamela Lawrence's picture

this is a very lovely poem, wonderful conveyance of the moment and the feelings....beautifully constructed. I really enjoyed reading it.
