He thought he understood,
He thought he saw the end
In that one shattered lie
She told to hide the blood of sin.
Torn between lie and deceit
Torn between anguish and pain
Of killing a truth and cursing a lie
She knew she must swallow her shame.
Some skeletons were meant for closets.
Some skeletons weren’t meant to breathe.
But skeletons in closets can be seen
Resting heavy on broken shoulders.
She thought she understood
She thought she saw her heart
Beating quickly, for his love
Made her second guess her thoughts.
But first she had to swallow
The painful shards of glass
That decorate her shameful past
With distant shattered memories.
Some skeletons were meant for closets.
Some skeletons weren’t meant to breathe.
But skeletons in closets can be seen
Resting heavy on broken shoulders.
After years of bearing a load of vice
Her strength was exhausted.
The closet crashed to the floor,
Revealing the unrevealed.
She wished she had locked it up and thrown away the key
Before the past was all he could see
Before sin and shame broke his loving heart
And cast her out on the lonely sea.
Some skeletons were meant for closets.
Some skeletons weren’t meant to breathe.
But he saw the skeletons resting heavy
On his lover’s tortured soul.
And he couldn’t stand to take a chance
And couldn’t let himself become
Another skeleton in her sacred closet
Another skeleton in her long-lost dream.
