She Hides

She hides behind her purple wings

she's always there but no one sees

her wings are a mask

hiding what she is from the world

If she were to let her wings spread

for a while she could fly again

but then they would see her without a veil

so she can never take that risk

She hides so long that she forgets what is real

a permanent shield has kept her there

the light shines through her wings

purple shadows dance on her face

but that is all the light she can hope for

She decided that she wants to let it go

she wants the whole world to see her glow

but even now that she wants to

she cannot let her self show

her wings have taken a mind of their own

they will not open at her command

It's too late

her wings have cramped up

and she will never fly again

I really enjoyed the symbolism in this poem. You use the masks to show her emotionless eyes, broken wings for her spirit, her veil as cosmetics, etc., and it has an incredible effect. It helps give your poem imagery along with the emotions you invoke of a woman who desperately is hiding because she's too afraid of being hurt by something, someone again. By the time she realizes she wants back her freedom, she no longer can find herself because she's too wrapped up in disguises to see the real from the fake. Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of insightful poetry with me.

you have highlighted the fear in all of us beautifully in this poem. the poem is extremely touching and portrays the vulnerability extremely well. Sometimes we hide too much and therefore when we want to let go, it is indeed too late. look forward to reading more of you work :)
