LOVE TIED TO TIME
No one who tried to tie time down-
Those who deal in vapors and mirrors,
Politicians, historians, bureaucrats-none
Of them will extricate themselves from time.
The cruel Greek gods with staffs and spectacles,
The hairy demigods, half men and half god, green
Fleas, fire breathers and birds of cuck-coo clocks,
Will all get tangled in the nets of time.
I myself tried to tie time down when you said you
Loved me but since then other layers of skin have
Covered the lips that spoke of locking love in time.
Many times we were washed by spring and many times
The sky covered us in different distant clouds; the great
Illusion of time is that it has any constancy at all.
