SINGULAR EVENTS ARE WE
Everything speaks to us only once fleetingly;
Yet we want to hold on to it for eternity; the
Very first kiss has its own singular message.
Maybe we walked the earth many times before
But prior civilizations never return for us; we
Have but one opportunity to speak with Plato.
Zigzagging through singular events and trying
To connect them all makes no sense at all; each
Teardrop contains its own particular joy or sorrow.
Our gaze is overcrowded with multiplicity and
Multifarious forms of events stringed like pearls
Known by oysters from so many far away seas.
Even the space between heartbeats is not the same;
Each interval records a moment unlike any other;
It’s a wonder that there is room enough in our head.
Nevertheless, we are alive. Our abundant being
Contains interminable past and futures and neither
Is our childhood nor out maturity less for it. Amen!
