SO MUCH FOR GODS
Shall gods be said to claim the sky
When stars are cursed by collapse
Be said to twinkle and then die
As do any mortal upon relapse
Shall it be said that Jupiterwise,
That old god Zeus was hard pressed
Could not a better thunderbolt devise
And on Mt. Olympus became dispossessed.
It shall be said that gods are stone
Then flung gravel upon the ground
Become as earthly chime and intone
A baneful and worldly earthen sound.
I do not trust their demagogic power
Nor do I trust their appointed reign
The Greek faces bore the saddest glower
Because their capricious gods were insane
Herkales, half man and half a god
Had to endure all twelve labors
He fought on this fertile earthen sod
Against these gods for his neighbors
