A Gift from the Sea?

Folder:
Fond Memories

Job 1:21 says something about “The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away”.  Well, I’m no bible thumper, but I’ve seen the sea do just that.  I’ve seen the cold Alaskan waters claim the lives of fishermen just trying to earn a living.  As sad and as tragic as that may be, I’ve also seen the sea give.  It gives life to all the earth, to the plants and creatures that live in her, and to the creatures, including man, who harvest her bounty.

But the most impressive act of giving I’ve seen took place on St. Paul Is, Alaska.  One day two guys I worked with were walking on the beach (keep in mind this is Alaska; there are no bikini clad beauties lying about tanning themselves, or people playing volley ball, or having cook outs, the beaches are empty and those who do venture on them are wearing parkas).  Suddenly, a three-foot long walrus tusk washed ashore a few feet in front of one of the guys.  That’s three feet of pure ivory almost magically appearing before this man.  To top it off, I believe it was his birthday, too.

Yes, the sea is mighty and can take away in an instant; but, on occasion, it gives some pretty cool gifts.
