-One Afternoon

One Afternoon

One afternoon

parked outside a stranger's house

waiting for a friend.

The afternoon winter sun

warming thru the windshield

while chill air encircles the car.

Empty yards, motionless toys

waiting for their owners

to arrive home from school.

The yellow school bus

lumbers around the corner

belching sooty diesel exhaust.

Excited kids spill from the doorway

making their way to empty yards

filling them with happy, playful noise.

My friend arrives and we drive off.

Soon the sun will set

and the street will be quiet

once again.

I love the simplicity of this piece and the way it covers the day of a child..

OK, if I didn't know you better I would think you were having a rendevous.....er....What's with this anyway? So mysterious and softly spoken, yet leaving the reader wondering...

Girl, we need to talk.

Ah. . .A most interesting piece Kim! Me thinks there is a lot more going on here than just chilly air, soot spitting buses, and happy kids out of school now at play! Forgive me if I'm off the mark of your intent. . . but I think you've painted us a vignette where everyone needs that quiet, comforting, or even exciting place to run to. Whether it be two close friends sharing their thoughts or just a kid sharing the simple things with a friend of their own-we all need those necessary moments in our life to fill our empty yards with joy, love and peace.
