Slowly slipping down the sandstone colored horizon,
casting ever lengthing shadows from the saguaros.
Just as quietly, the desert life emerges.
Snakes from the shadows, seeking small mammals.
The rapid 'took took took' call of the pygmy owl,
on the hunt for insects and mice in the dusky light.
At the base of a nearby hill, a lonely specimen sits...
....a solitary shack, almost sighs as it melts into the darkness.
Surviving each passing season, it stands ever alone
The only visitors, wild creatures, seeking refuge
from the relentless, baking rays of the desert sun.
Author's Notes/Comments:
Ten-word poem challenge...hey!...those were my ten words...oh well, I couldn't resist. The ten: sandstone, saguaro, surviving, snake, shadow, sun, silent, season, specimen, shack.

Hi Kim,
You have met your challenge well! I have made many trips to Arizona and appreciate the mystery and starkness of the grand saguaro. A very nice poem indeed.
