Swish, swish
The sound that you make
When I slice your rusty blade
Through restless fog
Carving shadows in the air
Somber shadows of things past
Unclear shadows of things present
Absent shadows of an absent future
Hovering for a moment; undecided, uncertain
Whirling abruptly, captured prisoners
Of an unyielding wind
Determined to obliterate
The faded remains of my lifeshadows
Somber shadows of things past
Unclear shadows of things present
Absent shadows of an absent future
Now, in place of shadows, empty spaces
Outlined by indifferent fog
At the edge of these nonexistent pictures
I stand, wavering; suddenly I step
Into absent shadows of an absent future
Author's Notes/Comments:
This poem was published in Who's Who of Poetry along with this biography:
I was born in Salinas, California on March 8, 1988. My parents cultivated my love of reading at a young age; in second grade, I asked my father for a good book, and he handed me Crime and Punishment. Reading eventually led to writing; as the oldest of six girls, I loved to escape to the bathroom or outside to write in my journal or write stories. In ninth grade I began to write poetry, and I have just recently started posting my work online.
This poem deals with suicidal themes, and describes a dream that I had the night before I wrote it. I turned it in as an English assignment, and received a Carpe Diem, an honor reserved for only the highest quality pieces. This is one of my personal favorites because of its imagery and the time I spent working on it.
