The Apple Tree

Serious Poems

You planted a seed in my mind,

I watched you every day,

I thought about you all the time,

I couldn’t stay away.

Then I found, to my surprise,

You had a seed of mine.

We came together, winds did blow,

Rain fell, the sun did shine.

Our seeds took root and saplings grew,

They burst up, straight and tall.

They grew blossoms, fruit and leaves,

But then there came the fall.

You were the apple of my eye,

My all, my strength, my one,

But withered leaves began to fall,

The ending had begun.

The winter came with freezing winds

Instead of spring’s cool breeze,

Our tree was bare, bereft of leaves,

And quickly did it freeze.

It didn’t last through bitter months,

It was too young to survive.

It withered, perished, failed and died

Though we were left alive.

We couldn’t plant another tree,

Our seeds had all been spent.

We waited in the endless cold,

A never-ending Lent.

There are no blossoms left for us,

No leaves against the sky;

The dead tree crackles under foot

As I leave and say goodbye.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I had to write a love poem without using any of the words normally associated with love. This is one of three outcomes. I figured that using a metaphor I could get my message accross without being too explicit.
