When you work your entire life then one day it all ends
You begin a new adventure which can be hard to comprehend.
The life you knew, the day to day all those hours you’ve amassed
When you look back over your shoulder are trailing in the past.
You find yourself in unfamiliar territory, and just a tad concerned
As this new adventure comes with a host of lessons to be learned.
For instance I’ve learned when you’re retired you get to stay up late
It’s amazing how much happens in the evening after eight!
I’ve learned I get to spend more time with Deborah- my mate
And unlike when I was working, I get to sleep in late.
I’ve learned schedules are no longer as important as they used to be
For now Monday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday all seem the same to me.
I’ve learned if you go out during the day, many older people you will see
And if you stay in you can’t imagine all the commercials on TV.
I’ve learned not to worry about my clothes as you did 2 weeks before
For at night, with no job the next day, I need not iron anymore.
I’ve learned when you retire the currency gets thin
Because there’s much more money going out than money coming in
Although I’ve always known that teaching would never make us rich
I have learned when you retire…insurance is a bitch!
So with the ending of our long careers there comes one little quirk
I’ve learned in order to make ends meet we both will have to work.
I’ve learned these lessons in two weeks- though it’s too early to critique
For I’m sure there are more lessons awaiting me next week.
Oh yes there is one more lesson that retirement has shown
It may cause some of you to smile but I imagine most of you will groan.
It seems with this retirement comes a lot of excess time
Which means I’ll have more opportunities to complete this daily rhyme. J

...and he asked her, "do you write poetry? Because I feel as if I am the ink that flows from your quill."
"No", she replied, "but I have experienced it. "
