Our Children
As the children make paper-worms
on a green iron bench in a corner
of the garden, close by the pool,
they learn to talk to each other, to be
with each other--a young boy & a young girl,
not yet in their teens--& all the green world
around them so cool & tender warm!
after laughter in the pool, after pranks
at noon--a moment of calm, togetherness,
quiet conversation--getting to know
each other, making paper-worms
while words, like rainbow-colored fish flow
from their mouths in the streaming summer.
