I humbly ask you, Frederic Chopin---
long gone from here, a really gentle man---
I ask, contritely, please . . . will you forgive
me (now, and for the time I have to live)
for my malevolent grudge through a span
of four decades?  Stupid I was. and led
(as if I had no brain inside my head)
to look down on, and quite misunderstand
your private and domestic situation
(having no privilege of interpretation,
no call to voice opinion or suspicion);
but I was ignorant, in ripe condition
to make myself a fool (yes, by admission)
through that fooled selfish bastard, Maurice Sand.
