Nocturnes: To A Ghost; An Essay

[for Lady Cara; not reflective of her, but in response to her encouragement to try this]

That which was always someone else's fault
now catches up to you and, at its halt,
unloads upon your soul all of the strife
that you once laid on others.  Stinking, foul,
and endless is this punishment that, now,
your death does not avoid; nor, once, your life.
A revenant, in shadowed darkness---howl
alone, on shattered stones, with ghastly scowl.

Author's Notes/Comments:

In these lines, the tale deals with past, present, future; the concept of an after existence, with punishment for an offender; a haunted landscape; and an implied backstory.  I believe these elements constitute a ghost story.
