At The Hospital On New Year's Eve, 2001

[cf. Matthew 25:40]

(from observation; her name unknown; but this is for her)

Blond, and a little curvy even before
the pregnancy; clad in a roomy sweatshirt,
baggy carpenter's jeans, and white socks (with the
thin red seams across the toes), her cowboy boots
(well broken in) kicked off somewhere: she glides past.
(They told her to 'Get rid of it.' She refused.
Teenaged single mother; they said, 'Know-it-all.'
The self-righteous deny her their courtesy,
but Jesus has not denied her Salvation
when she came to the Cross. And you and I know,
my faithful brethren, to bless her in Christ's Name.)
She walks these corridors to start the process,
glowing with radiance of love, projected,
ripe with the coming life she has protected.

Starward
