Good friends relax: great Dante's Purgatory,
is, in the poem, a spiritual allegory.
He knew that who is in there, any day,
is not for us to judge, or even say.

Author's Notes/Comments:
This couplet addresses the concern of my 'fundamentalist' friends, who dislike my admiration for the poetry of Dante (which does not contradict my Sacramental faith). I doubt that Dante considered the Divina Commedia as a theological summary of final authority; it was, and is, and always shall be a Poem---allegoric?, of course; literal?---hardly. To be ignorant of these distinctions is one of the high marks of spiritual ignorance, generally. And an ignorant Christian is not an oxymoron (cf. Hebrews 5:11-14).
