I'm from...
a world
where humans slaughter each other
in a raging war of hell
yet we communicate across seas
via AOL
a nation
where we trust in God
to keep liberty in our reach
yet prayer is offensive in public
and not a freedom of speech
a state
where if a fifteen year old skips school
it's his parents' fault
yet a boy of eight can accidentally kill his sister
and be charged as an adult
a home
where if we get into a fight
we conveniently say 'I love you'
yet it's forgotten moments later
and we start the cycle anew
but I'm also from…
a universe
where a child is miraculously born
to a couple pronounced barren
still they continued to hope and pray
finding their faith and love therein
a country
where flowers bloom in the spring
regardless of who's there to witness
still continuing their way of life
offering their petals for the sun to kiss
a school
where two students can walk together
despite gender, wealth, race or religion
still achieving their personal goals
learning to accept what life has given
and a place
where I'm protected from the world
judgment, fraud, lies and scorn
still hoping that I'll rise above
the generation into which I was born
incredible, and congrats on the poetry contest.peace.
jen this is a wonderful poem and it really explains everything going on in the world its no wonder that it won a poetry contest.
Very Deep, Very true, VERY deserving of that poetry award...
It's nice to see that you realize there's always two side to things, and that you can always choose the better side. This was an excellent poem and well deserved award.
