Footnote: To Every Creature

[after Matthew 27:51; Mark 16:15]

(a Tanka for my friend, Santosh)

Afternoon darkness;
great quake awakened it from
long sleep to long swim
(sole; salt water) to shelter---
distant, freshwater lake, north.

Author's Notes/Comments:

To the best of my knowledge, I believe I am the first to suggest a connection between the earthquake that followed the death of Christ and the migration of a pehistoric animal into Loch Ness in Scotland.  Until evidence of the contrary, I shall claim this as an original hypothesis.  The idea of a sea monster during the New Testament Age first occured to me sometime between Labor Day and the end of September, 1975.  Intended to be a tale in prose for the amusement of the Lady Siderial, my first love, neither the story nor her amusement were forthcoming whatsoever.  I did not then associate it with Loch Ness, not until tonight.  Thus the new form, and the new association, bear a new dedication to a good and understanding friend.
