[after Luke 23:49 and 24:21a]
The crosses, as they stood, were not that tall;
not very high that outcrop of bare rock
that stands not too far from the city's wall,
an execution site that many call
Golgotha---Calvary---Place of the Skull.
Three crucified men perished there today---
on either side, a guilty criminal
(and each deserving this death to the full);
the man upon the center cross was Christ---
we thought; Whom Pilate found, was innocent.
But, to avoid a local incident
he ordered Jesus to be sacrificed
to stave off sarcedotal discontent.
We stood, afar, and watched . . . in utter shock.
