One fact you Hebrew slaves must be quite sure
of is: Pharaoh is your sole customer.
For him you must do all that has been bidden;
no order of his can be overridden.
Around him all your services consist.
For him (above all men, just him, alone)
your lives have been permitted to exist.
His god-like images we carve in stone---
the cities raised with bricks of mud and straw---
will last a thousand years and never fall.
Be proud, as we are, that his gracious heart
has given even slaves like you a part
in the remembrance of his royal glory.
Long ages, yet to come, will tell his story.
