At The End Of An Anonymous Memoir

[after Matthew 27:25]

We did not like the message, so we killed

The messenger.  Not all of us, of course---

just those who bore arms and stood to enforce

the laws.  Only that way we could have stilled

the frenzy of our furious rage that filled

our hearts, with little space left for remorse.

We did not like the message that He brought.

We did not like the sudden way it caught

on in our public speech and private thought.

Self-righteous?  You accuse us of grave error.

Sometimes a problem needs a little terror

to settle it.  Our judge is History.

We said, stepping forward responsibly,

"On us, and on our children, His blood be."

Starward
